, some recent polls, not just nationally but across several swing states have shown romney gaining some traction and getting very close to overtaking the president in several key swing states and both nationally. now, the romney campaign did put out a memo earlier in the week throwing cold water on one ohio state poll they took issue with saying it wasn't properly calibrated but they are also at the same time touting a new "washington post" poll showing mitt romney leading the president nationally and doing very well among independents. at the same time we should p point out that along this tour he has hit a bit of a roadblock. one of his top surrogates, john sununu made some comments when he suggested that colin powell was endorsing the president because of his race. sununu put out a statement saying he believes powell endorsed the president because of his policies. it's not just the tough talk on the campaign trail that we're seeing that is causing things to get a little rocky out here. there is also the prospect of a major storm heading to the east coast. what forecasters have dubbed

portsmouth, new hampshire. >> reporter: mitt romney has kicked off his swing state blitz in this final weekend of the presidential campaign starting the day in new hampshire and then heading next to iowa and colorado. we're hearing the gop nominee touch on some themes that he's been bringing up quite a bit in the last couple of days, saying he is the candidate of what he calls real change. he's also going through his five-point economic plan to get the country back on track, talking about ideas like cutting the deficit, tapping into domestic energy resources and fixing the nation's public school system. but one thing that he has been trying to zero in on in this final stretch of the campaign, he's been going after the president's mantel, being a post-partisan president. in the words of mitt romney, the president has been what he calls the most partisan. here's what he had to say. >> yesterday, the president said something you might have heard by now that i think surprised a lot of people. he said voting is the best revenge. he told his supporters, voting for revenge. vote for revenge?

momentum that the romney campaign talks about and is evident in at least some of the state polls is a fiction and that the state polls are further apart and more to the advantage of the president than anyone is letting on. is that how you see this race in the final nine days? >> well, i do think that governor romney gained a little after the first debate. i think it levelled off. this race is where you and i have been -- i have said this to you many times over the course of the last year. it is a close race. as you look at these battleground states, we are even or ahead in virtually all of them in these critical states like ohio. we maintain a consistent lead. i think you had it as a three-point lead in october. a four-point lead with us at 50% as of friday, so, yes, that's how i view it, but the main thing is not to look at the polling, but to look at the voting. millions of people vote. about one-third of the people in iowa have voted, for example, and we believe that we are mounting up a very, very large lead in iowa based on where those early votes are coming from. we're enthused

guess the key there is i say obama is going to take virginia. this is a state romney really needs to win. i've given romney north carolina and florida, swing states and ohio, romney colorado. give obama ohio and new hampshire. i think the point i want to make about this map is a broader one and it's a criticism and an expression of bafflement about the romney campaign strategy. if you look at that map, to win to get to 270, they have to win virginia, florida, north carolina. got to win colorado. putting that together, pick off ohio or some combination of wisconsin and plus new hampshire, iowa, nevada. a combination there and the polls out of ohio and wisconsin, not looking good for romney. to me the issue is this. there are states on the map that could have been competitive. oregon, michigan, minnesota, pennsylvania and even maybe where obama had big margins in 2008 like 15, 16-point margins but you have to go back to 2004 to see, you know, a three-point race in minnesota. a three-point race in michigan. these are states, there's a lot of flexibility in these states. if romney with a

is the state that will likely decide the presidential election. governor romney knows that only too well that no republican has won the white house without winning ohio and the race right now in ohio is close to a dead heat. let's look at the two latest polls. first, our own cnn/orc poll of likely voters shows president obama with a three point lead. now that is inside the statistical margin of error. so that's about as close as it can get. and nbc "wall street journal" poll gives the president a six point lead in ohio. a little better for obama. still very close. now obama may be the top prize for the candidates right now l are other important battleground states. we'll take through over the course of the next hour in a way that only cnn can. john avalon and i traveled more than 1800 miles on cnn's battleground bus tour as the race for the white house reaches its conclusion. no mat wrer i ter where i go, t economy is the most important issue in this election. i've been traveling with john avalon. he joins me now as does my good friend christine romans. she joins me from washington.
